How Much Should You Tip House Cleaners?

There is no required amount and we never expect one. Here is how gratuities actually work with a company crew versus an independent cleaner, and the things clients do that help our teams far more than a tip.

There is no required amount, and Art's Cleaning Services never expects one. Our published service terms state it plainly: gratuities are optional, are not included in our fees, and are directed to the cleaners who performed the work. Tipping is etiquette here, not part of the price you were quoted.

That answer frustrates people who want a number, so the rest of this article covers what is actually true instead — who receives a tip, how it differs with a company crew versus an independent cleaner, and what our teams value more than cash.

Does Art's Cleaning Services expect a tip?

No. Nothing about a visit changes based on whether you tip, and nothing in our pricing assumes you will.

The quote we send is the full price of the job. We reply to requests as soon as possible during business hours with a written estimate, and that figure does not quietly leave room for a gratuity on top.

Why we will not publish a "standard" tip amount

Because we do not have one, and inventing a percentage would be dishonest. Any figure we printed here would be a number we made up, not a policy anyone at Art's Cleaning Services actually follows.

What clients do varies enormously, and it varies for sensible reasons: household budget, how often you book, how large the job was, and how long you have been booking with the same company. None of that reduces to a single rule.

If you want a number, the honest guidance is to pick one you are comfortable with and stop worrying about it. Nobody on our team is keeping score.

How does tipping work with a company crew vs an independent cleaner?

The difference matters, and it is the part most tipping advice skips. A tip left for a company crew is usually shared; a tip left for an independent goes to one person who is also the business owner.

Company crew (how we work)Independent cleaner
Who receives itThe cleaners who did that visit — on a team of two or team of three, one tip is split between themTypically one person, who is also the business
Relationship to the priceSeparate from the quote; our terms state gratuities are not included in feesVaries — some independents price with tips in mind, some do not
Whether you will be thereOften not; many clients give a code or lockbox and come home to a finished houseMore often present, since scheduling is one-to-one
Consistency of who shows upWe assign familiar team members wherever the schedule allowsOne person by definition
Better alternativeA platform review, direct feedback, or requesting your crew by nameA referral to a neighbor, which directly grows their business

Neither model is better. But if you are used to tipping an independent in cash at the door, a company visit will feel different — and it is worth knowing your tip is being divided rather than handed to one person.

Who actually gets the money on a company crew?

The cleaners who performed the service. Our terms direct any gratuity to the crew that did the work, not to the office.

Practically, that means a single tip left on the counter after a team of two finishes a standard clean is shared between two people. On a deep clean run by a team of three, it splits three ways.

If you want it to reach a specific cleaner, say so — either in a note or when you message us. Otherwise the default is a split.

What helps our crew more than a tip?

Several things, and this is the genuinely useful part of the answer. Ranked by how much difference each one actually makes:

  1. A review that names the cleaner. Our reviews live on Google (565), Yelp (196), Thumbtack (107), Facebook (44), and Nextdoor. A named review is the single most valuable thing a happy client can leave behind.
  2. Fast, specific feedback — good or bad. Tell us within 24 hours if something was missed and we return to re-clean it free under our 100% satisfaction promise. Telling us early is worth more than tipping and staying quiet.
  3. Requesting familiar team members. Continuity makes every visit better because the team already knows your home. One Woodbridge, Irvine client has run biweekly service with a familiar team for eight months, and the visits get faster and sharper over time.
  4. A referral to a neighbor. Nextdoor recommendations and word of mouth are how most of our recurring routes were built across 5,000+ homes cleaned since 2021.
  5. Practical prep. Clear parking instructions, a working gate code, and a note about where the pets will be save real time. Our guide on how to prepare for a cleaning crew covers the rest.

None of those cost anything. All of them outlast a single visit.

Should you tip more for a deep clean or a move-out?

Still optional — but it is fair to notice that the jobs are not the same size. A deep cleaning or move-out is a fundamentally heavier day than a maintenance visit.

The published reviews show the spread honestly. J Lin wrote of a move-out that two cleaners left an 800 sq ft condo "spotless in 2 hours." Allison Giffin's move-out was a different order of work — after her renters left, "the entire kitchen, including the ceiling, chandelier, & cabinets, was covered in cooking oil."

Most clients who tip think in terms of effort rather than a fixed share of the invoice. That instinct is a reasonable one, and we are not going to put a number on it.

Is it rude not to tip house cleaners?

Not with us. There is no awkwardness at the door and no effect on the next booking.

The most common pattern among our recurring clients is nothing at all on ordinary visits, and something occasional after a big job or at the end of the year. That is entirely normal.

What about tipping at the holidays?

Holiday tipping is etiquette, not obligation, and it is the point in the year when it comes up most. Clients who have had familiar team members all year often mark it in some way; plenty of others do not, and nothing changes for either group.

A written note works too, especially if it names the people who have been coming to your home. Our crews read them.

If you do want to leave something at the holidays for a crew you rarely see in person, tell us and we will make sure it reaches the right people rather than sitting on a counter.

Does tipping change the service, the price, or the guarantee?

No, on all three. Our written checklist runs the same way in every home — and on a deep clean that is the full 50-Point Checklist: 12 kitchen points, 12 bathroom points, 12 living-area points, 6 bedroom points, and 8 around the house.

Our 100% satisfaction promise applies identically whether you have ever tipped or never have. If something is missed, we come back and re-clean it at no charge. Add-ons like inside the oven, inside the fridge, and interior windows are priced separately and quoted upfront.

Does any of this work differently in Orange County vs Los Angeles?

The etiquette is identical in both. The logistics differ, mostly because of what the homes and buildings are like.

Orange CountyLos Angeles Westside
Typical propertyDetached homes and driveways across Irvine (92618, 92602, 92620) and its neighborsHOA condos and towers around Santa Monica (90401–90405) and West LA (90025)
Whether you meet the crewMore often — parking is at the house and clients are frequently homeLess often — access runs through front desks, service elevators, and reserved loading-dock windows
How appreciation usually reaches usLeft at the home, or sent through the officeMore commonly a message or a review, since the crew may come and go unseen
Price contextPer-city tiers are published for Orange County citiesNo per-city tiers; jobs are quoted from the service-level bands
Tipping policyOptional, never expectedOptional, never expected

The one real difference worth planning around: on the Westside, permit-only street parking and building access rules mean a crew often finishes and leaves through a service entrance. If you wanted to hand something over in person, it may simply never come up.

Pricing context for each region lives in our cost guides — house cleaning costs in Irvine for Orange County, and house cleaning costs in West LA and Santa Monica for the Westside. Neither includes a gratuity line, because neither needs one.

The bottom line

Tip if you want to, in whatever amount feels right, and skip it with a completely clear conscience. Art's Cleaning Services does not require, expect, or price for gratuities, and our terms say so in writing.

If you want to do something that genuinely helps the people who clean your home, leave a review naming them, tell us fast when something is off, and ask for familiar team members next time. Across 850+ five-star reviews at a 4.9 rating, those three things are what our teams actually talk about.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have to tip house cleaners?

No. Art's Cleaning Services does not require or expect a tip, and our published service terms state that gratuities are optional and not included in our fees. The quote you receive upfront is the full price of the job. Nothing about the clean, the schedule, or the satisfaction promise changes if you never tip.

Who gets the tip when a team of two cleans my house?

The cleaners who did that visit. Our terms direct any gratuity to the crew that performed the service rather than the office, so a single tip left after a team of two is split between them. If you want it to reach one specific cleaner, leave a note or tell us and we will pass it along.

What can I do instead of tipping?

Leave a review that names the cleaner on Google, Yelp, Thumbtack, or Facebook, tell us quickly if anything was missed, and request familiar team members for your next visit. Referrals to neighbors help too. Those four things do more for our teams than cash, and none of them cost you anything.

Should I tip differently for a deep clean than a regular clean?

It is entirely your call, and we will not put a figure on it. A deep clean or move-out is simply a bigger day than a maintenance visit — one published review describes a six-hour move-out versus about three and a half hours for a standard house cleaning. Most clients who tip weigh effort rather than invoice size.

Is tipping expected in Los Angeles but not Orange County?

No. The policy is identical everywhere we work, from Irvine to Santa Monica: optional and never expected. The only real difference is logistical — on the Westside, building access and permit parking mean crews often come and go without meeting you, so appreciation usually arrives as a message or a review instead.
