How Should You Prepare Your Home Before a Cleaning Crew Arrives?
You do not need to clean before the cleaners come. You do need about 15 minutes: clear surfaces, secure valuables, sort out access and parking, and settle the pets. Here is the full list.

About 15 minutes of prep is all it takes. Clear personal items off surfaces, put valuables and fragile pieces away, sort out door access and parking, and settle any pets. You do not need to clean beforehand, and you do not need to supply products or equipment — we bring everything.
The goal of prep is simple: convert crew time from tidying into cleaning. Every minute spent moving your belongings is a minute not spent on the surfaces you are actually paying for.
The 10-step prep checklist
Work down this list the evening before or the morning of your visit. Steps 1 through 4 matter most; the rest are refinements.
- Clear flat surfaces. Counters, dining tables, nightstands, and desks. A cleared counter gets fully wiped; a covered one gets wiped around.
- Put away valuables and cash. Not because of any concern — our cleaners are background- and reference-checked — but so nothing needs handling or decisions made about it.
- Move fragile and sentimental items. Anything irreplaceable should be off open shelving and out of the work zone. Crews will always work around it, but out of the way is better than carefully around.
- Confirm access. Door code, lockbox, gate code, garage, or a key left somewhere specific. Send it in advance rather than at the appointment time.
- Sort parking. In Irvine and Tustin, guest parking and permit zones catch out visiting crews constantly. Tell us where to park before the van is circling.
- Settle pets. A closed room, a crate, or out of the house. Note where they are so nobody opens the wrong door.
- Strip beds if you want linens changed. Leave fresh sets out on the bed. Otherwise beds get made as-is.
- Pick up floor clutter. Toys, shoes, laundry piles. Floors can only be vacuumed and mopped where floors are visible.
- Empty the sink. Dishes in the dishwasher, not the basin. A full sink blocks the single most-used fixture in a kitchen clean.
- Flag your priorities in writing. One short message — "the guest bathroom and the kitchen floor matter most" — reshapes the whole visit.
Do you need to clean before the cleaners come?
No. Tidying and cleaning are different jobs, and only tidying helps us.
Putting a stack of mail away helps because it exposes a surface. Pre-scrubbing a shower does not help, because that is the job you booked and we will do it properly regardless.
If a home is heavily cluttered, tell us before booking rather than on the day. It changes the time estimate, and we would rather quote it honestly than run short.
How does access work if you are not home?
You do not need to be home. Most of our recurring clients are not, and we work from written access instructions — a door code, a lockbox code, a gate code, or an agreed key location.
Send those instructions when you book, not on the morning of the visit. Our cleaners are background- and reference-checked, and every visit carries a 100% satisfaction promise, so leaving access is routine for us across Irvine, Tustin, and Costa Mesa.
If a code changes, message us. We typically reply within 15 minutes, which is usually faster than a crew standing at a door.
What do we bring, and what do you handle?
Everything on the cleaning side is ours. The only things on your side are access, decisions, and your own belongings.

How do crews protect your home while working?
Physically, with corner and floor protection, and by working in a fixed order so nothing gets carried between rooms. One of our published reviews names both the punctuality and the protection.
"Arrived at time specified, protected wall corners and floor."
— Kara G., Housecall Pro review
That is not a courtesy detail. Moving equipment through hallways is where scuffs happen, and protecting corners and floors before the work starts is the difference between a clean home and a clean home with a mark on the stairwell wall.
The same principle appears in our tile work, where crews protect baseboards, walls, and furniture from water — described in what real cleaning jobs look like.
What should you tell the crew before they start?
Three things, ideally in writing when you book.
- Priorities. Which two rooms matter most if time runs tight.
- Problem surfaces. Unsealed stone, a delicate floor finish, a fixture that only takes a specific product.
- Rooms to skip. A home office, a nursery mid-nap, a room being renovated.
Written beats verbal because it reaches the crew, not just the person who took the call. This matters most on a first deep cleaning or a same-day cleaning, where there is less shared history to work from.
Does prep change by service type?
Yes, and mostly in how much clearing is needed up front.
- Standard and recurring: minimal prep once a rhythm is established. Surfaces clear, floors clear, that is it.
- House cleaning first visit: the full 10-step list. The first visit sets the baseline.
- Deep or move-out cleaning: clear cabinets and closets you want reached, and empty the fridge and oven if those add-ons are booked.
- Seasonal reset: clear the high spots too, since vents, fans, and blinds are the priority — see the Orange County spring cleaning checklist.
Note that inside the oven, inside the fridge, and interior windows are paid add-ons — they are not part of our published checklists — the 50-point deep-clean scope covers 12 kitchen, 12 bathroom, 12 living area, 6 bedroom, and 8 whole-house tasks. If you want them, book them.
Unsure which level of service you need? Deep cleaning versus standard cleaning sets out the difference.
